A group of 16 middle-school students from Elev8 Chicago schools traveled to Washington, DC, earlier this year to participate in the "Voices in Action: National Youth Summit" at Howard University.

The Summit, organized by the US Department of Education, brought together 500 students from across the country to discuss how the United States can improve college completion rates. The goal? To make us the world leader in college completion by 2020.

Some Elev8 Chicago students had the opportunity to visit the offices of their federal representatives while in the capital. They shared their experiences in the program and encouraged their congressmen to support Elev8.

While at the summit, students were able to learn from youth from across the United States. Richlyn Whittaker, an eighth-grader at Perspectives Middle Academy in Chicago, said he "learned that Auburn Gresham isn't the only neighborhood with problems." After meeting so many great people from all over the country, he hopes to help make the world a better place.

Lastly, the students were able to tour the Howard campus and speak with a Howard student from Chicago. The exposure to a college environment was both eye-opening and motivating, and the  Elev8 youth benefited from seeing someone from their neighborhood succeeding on a college campus.
