Elev8 New Mexico Receives National Award for Learning AchievementElev8 New Mexico was honored this summer with the Rookie of the Year Award from MicroSociety, a leading national nonprofit after-school organization, at its 18th Annual National Conference for Real World Learning. MicroSociety, which specializes in motivating students to succeed using real-world learning environments, gives the annual award to a new site that demonstrates outstanding achievement within its first year of operation. Students in a MicroSociety after-school program create their own society, with government, arts, cultural organizations, businesses and more-and every student has a role in running that society. "We chose MicroSociety because we felt it was the perfect way to teach kids 21st- century skills they can use at school and in the real world," explained Chelanna Balok, the Y-MicroSociety site coordinator at Grant Middle School. Parry Silcox, the Elev8 NM site coordinator at Grant and Wilson middle schools in Albuquerque, credits MicroSociety with supporting Elev8's positive reputation at school sites. "Teachers who have been at these schools for many years are enjoying MicroSociety because it connects to what they are teaching in the classroom," Silcox said. "They want to use MicroSociety to enhance their teaching." "We gave the Rookie of the Year Award to Elev8 New Mexico because of their inventive ways of engaging children using MicroSociety. Additionally, their focus on STEM ventures, career pathways and community involvement also aligns well with our organization's outlook," remarked Carolynn King Richmond, President and CEO of MicroSociety, "They are off to a great start, and we can't wait to see what the future holds!" |
