There are 10 fewer days on the public school academic calendar in Chicago, compared to the national average. And each day students are in school, their class time is 45 minutes shorter than it is for most students around the country.

Marquette Elementary Principal Paul O’Toole is fighting to extend the school day so his students have the same amount of classtime as their peers in other cities. He spent about $170,000 on Elev8 programming last year to extend the school day by one hour for middle-grade students, bringing their daily instructional time more in line with national norms.
