Elev8 Participates in New Mexico Children’s Cabinet

Elev8 recently brought over 150 students, parents, and supporters to Santa Fe, NM to advocate against proposed state education, after-school enrichment, and health care budget cuts. "Invest in Children, Strengthen New Mexico" was the message.

Free Tax Clinics for Elev8 Oakland Families

All five Elev8 campuses in Oakland are hosting free tax clinics for parents and community members this semester. Bilingual family advocates, Safe Passages staff, and a group of volunteers trained in tax preparation walk people through a complicated tax filing process at the clinics. The free service saves money for many families who might otherwise pay outside vendors to prepare their taxes.

Math + Money = Music

In a collaboration with Elev8 partners Creative Alliance and Kariz Kids, students at Tench Tilghman middle school in Baltimore are producing their very own CDs. Students learn how to create original instrumentals, format and structure songs, operate recording software, as well as the business side of the music industry. They take on the roles of producer, engineer, writer, and artist, and create original songs together—all while operating within a budget.

Elev8 Chicago Students Learn Bike Repair

Generations of middle-school students have taken shop class and home economics, but few outside Ames Middle School in Logan Square have learned to repair bicycles for course credit. By the end of this school year, 500 Ames seventh and eighth graders will have rotated through the three to four week class, connected with LISC/Chicago’s Elev8 program and taught by Tony Hughes of West Town Bikes.
