Elev8 Students Are Taking Advantage of the Summer!

Even though the school year is over, Elev8 students are continuing their learning through the summer months.  Check out some of these links and stories featured on the Elev8 site for information on summer learning and other interesting resources.

Elev8 Students Gear Up For Summer Learning Activities

Elev8 students are getting ready for their summer learning activities to begin. At Roosevelt Middle School in Oakland, approximately 120 sixth and seventh graders will be participating in Elev8 summer programming. The programs will focus on both academic (math and English Language Arts) and enrichment activities. A group of rising eighth graders will also participate in an Algebra Camp this summer.

Summer Learning Resources

Now that summer has begun, students are at risk to lose the academic progress they made during the school year. In fact, research shows that students lose approximately two months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computation skills during summer vacation. And, low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement, even though middle-class students tend to make slight gains over the same time period.

RAND Report: Making Summer Count

A new RAND report discusses the potential for summer programs to improve achievement, and the challenges of developing and sustaining such programs.

Handbook for School-Based Health Centers

This handbook stemmed from a request from Chicago Elev8 principals who requested written guidelines for working with their School-Based Health Centers.

Access to health care at school significantly increases the likelihood that children in poor communities will have medical and dental checkups during the school year and significantly decreases emergency department use by their families. Learn More
